Frequent Questions

What do I measure my window to determine the size of curtains required?

Firstly use a metal tape measure so that your measurements will be as accurate as possible. Then you need to make two measurements:

  1. Total curtain width

First measure the length of your curtain pole or track (A). If you do not have one yet bear in mind that the pole or track should ideally be positioned 6" (15cm) above the window and extend 6" (15cm) either side of the window (excluding finials).

As a rule the width of your curtain material should be at least twice as wide as the pole or track. A wider curtain will give a more luxurious effect. When you supply us with a Total Curtain Width (pole/track length) measurement, we will calculate how much material to use.

  2. Total Curtain Drop

Decide whether you want your curtains to fit to the sill, below the sill, to the floor or trailing. We suggest that sill length curtains finish 1/4" (0.6cm) above the sill (B), curtains that fall below the sill finish 6" (15cm) below (C), floor length curtains finish 1/2" (1.3cm) from the floor (D) and trailing curtains finish up to 12" (30cm) beyond the floor (E).

If you are using tracks you should measure from the top of the track. If you are using poles you should measure from the eye at the bottom of the curtain rings.  For tab top curtains measure from the top of the pole. For slot tops and eyelets measure from 1" (2.5cm) above the pole.

Then repeat the measurement process just to be sure there were no errors first time round.

Will my curtains fade?

Sunlight will cause your fabric to fade over time. To reduce fading it is recommended that curtains are lined. If there is a lot of sun, blackout lining maybe more appropriate, especially in a bedroom.

How do I measure my windows to fit blinds?

It depends on whether you want to hang your blinds inside or outside the window recess.

  1. Inside the window recess

    Width (A)
Measure across the width in several places and take the smallest measurement. We will reduce the width by a further 1cm to ensure that it hangs freely and does not drag against the side of the window recess.

    Height (B)
Measure the height in several places and take the smallest measurement. We will reduce the height by a further 1cm to ensure that it hangs freely and does not drag against the side of the window recess.

  2. Outside the window recess

Width (C)

Decide how far you want the fabric to overlap each side of the window and add that to the measurement taken above. We recommend between 5cm and 10cm on each side.

Height (D)

Decide how far you want the fabric to overlap top and bottom and add that to the measurement taken above. We recommend between 5cm and 10cm below and between 10cm and 15cm above (to ensure that when pulled up the blind does not obscure the top of the window).
